Ten years ago the last place residents of the Chicago neighborhood Lakeview wanted to send their kids was Nettelhorst Elementary School. Now, it’s one of the most sought after. Susan Kurland was the principal of Nettelhorst when she and two moms helped turn the neighborhood school around. Kurland also co-authored How to Walk to School: Blueprint for a Neighborhood School Renaissance. She told Richard Steele the community didn’t always support Nettelhorst.
