Over the past week or so, some in the medical community have been abuzz over a proposed treatment of congenital adrenal hyperplasia, or CAH, whose physical side effects include the appearance of ambiguous genitalia in girls. Proponents say it can prevent surgery later in the child's life. But a local professor has a number of concerns about the treatment, including her allegation that it amounts to trying to prevent homosexuality in the womb. Dr. Alice Dreger
is a professor of Clinical Medical Humanities and Bioethics at Northwestern University, and co-author of a recent paper on the matter and she explains more.
