Proposed Permit Would Limit Pollution from U.S. Steel

Last month, the U.S. Steel plant in Gary, Indiana, turned on some sprinklers outside a landfill where they keep some hazardous waste. The water comes from the bottom of the landfill itself. U.S. Steel says it’s part of a pilot program to help with ammonia levels in the wastewater, and the Indiana Department of Environmental Management approved the project. But it has some environmentalists crying foul, just as the company is applying for renewal of its wastewater permit. WBEZ Northwest Indiana bureau reporter Michael Puente was at a public meeting last night for that permit process and has this update.
