The late John Stroger arrived in Chicago in 1953 and methodically worked his way up to become one of the county’s major power brokers. He became the first African-American president of the Cook County Board in 1994 and held that post until he suffered a stroke in 2006.

He died on January 18 at the age of 78.

For Chicago Public Radio, Sonari Glinton produced this remembrance.
