Funeral services for Dempsey Travis are set for this morning at the Apostolic Church of God on Chicago’s South Side. He wrote nearly two dozen books detailing his life, and the experiences of African-Americans in the 20th century. In doing so, he became something of a walking and talking history of black Chicago. The real estate magnate, civil rights activist, musician, and author died last Thursday at the age of 89.
