One year after that visit to Altgeld Gardens, Linda Paul and Richard Cahan returned to catch up with some of the 3,000 people living there. While it was the anniversary of Mr. Obama’s first year in office, there were bigger issues on the minds of residents. A little more than a month earlier, 16-year-old Fenger High student Derrion Albert was beaten to death blocks from the school. And the reality of violence, and how it affects residents, was ubiquitous. On the first anniversary of President Barack Obama’s election, one year after they first visited, reporter Linda Paul and photographer Richard Cahan returned to the Altgeld Gardens community.
