South Side Mall Has Underground History

Ford City Mall on the south side of Chicago got its name back when Ford was manufacturing airplane engines there. Today - below the Penney's and Carson's and Old Navy - there are still vast tunnels where shadows of the past remain. Earlier this year, we took a tour with two people who are deeply familiar with the structure. John Kudia wrote a fictionalized history of Ford City in his novel Kilo-Quad which he wrote under the pseudonym Jack Kay. And Frank Werner is chief engineer for the complex.
