Half a world away, Baghdad is coping with almost daily violence. Yesterday, a triple bombing left more than two dozen people dead. That highlights the danger still facing our troops.

Today, on Veterans Day, we take time to reflect on the sacrifices our soldiers are making for us. That’s something Tammy Duckworth thinks about every day as director of the Illinois Department of Veterans’ Affairs. Duckworth herself is a veteran who lost both her legs in Iraq. She was named to her current post by Illinois Governor Rod Blagojevich  after she lost a bid for Congress.

Now, as the administration changes in Washington, Duckworth says she has high hopes for Obama’s approach to veterans’ issues. But Duckworth says the idea of the governor naming her to replace Obama in the Senate came as a surprise.
