One of the things Chicago’s next mayor will have on his or her plate is control over Chicago Public Schools.

CPS is the country’s third-largest school system. The mayor has the power to select the head – or CEO – of CPS and appoint members to the board that oversees the entire system. But a coalition of Chicago groups wants to change that arrangement. Jitu Brown is part of that group. He’s with the Kenwood Oakland Community Organization.

When “Eight Forty-Eight” spoke with Brown recently, he explained why he thinks it is time to for an elected board.
