Last month, the FCC announced it would take measures to improve its collection of data on minority and female broadcast media ownership. The Government Accountability Office pointed out holes in the FCC’s methodology last year. Some types of stations were exempt from filing reports, and data quality and collection were inadequate. This data is supposed to guide FCC and Congressional programs that encourage diverse media ownership—and tell them if those programs are working.
