What began as a mundane Cook County board meeting earlier this week ended with Commissioners facing down President Todd Stroger, with a 12-3 vote to repeal last year’s sales tax hike. Today, Stroger’s still contemplating a veto of their move and voters are waiting to see whether the tax will stay or services – as Stroger has warned – will go. Crain’s Chicago Business columnist Greg Hinz says there’s something more momentous going on here. Hines thinks Commissioner John Daley’s “yay” on the repeal, along with Mayor Daley’s reaction to Wednesday’s vote, could signal a tectonic shift in Chicago’s political geography.
