Over the last year or so, we’ve brought you many segments about the sale of the Chicago Tribune to ‘colorful’ billionaire Sam Zell. But in a way, Zell’s larger-than-life persona brings the Trib full circle. The paper was founded by Colonel Robert McCormick, a figure as loved and hated in his own time as Zell is today.

McCormick’s newspaper was a massive megaphone for his politics and his ideals, and he certainly wasn’t afraid to use it. Back in 2000, 848’s Steve Edwards sat down with Chicago television producer Jonathan Powers, who had just completed work on a McCormick biography for cable channel A & E. Powers said that that the Colonel as a man was at least as big as his legend.
