Ethereal Poland-born jazz vocalist Grazyna Auguscik is a stalwart of the Chicago jazz scene. Auguscik and her band members dropped by our Jim and Kay Mabie Performance Studio to bring us their rendition of Stevie Wonder’s “They Won’t Go When I Go” as part of the third season of our UnderCover series. She also sat down with the architect of our UnderCover series, Colby Beserra. Auguscik says that her own vocal style was influenced by a multitude of jazz artists, but none impacted her more than Ella Fitzgerald. And while she was always deeply drawn to jazz music, it wasn’t always easy for her to find, especially growing up behind the Iron Curtain in 1980s Poland.

The Grazyna Auguscik Quintet performs this Monday night at 9pm at the Green Mill in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood.
