Un-Ditching the Creek
Population growth has left its mark on the Chicago area's waterways. Streams and rivers are engineered to meet the needs of city dwellers and rural farmers. Now there's a move to restore some of those waterways - even using historical photos to recreate the original bends and channels.
A group of volunteers and scientists headed out recently to one nearby creek. They went to see what a lowly shellfish could tell us about how the restoration is going. WBEZ's Gabriel Spitzer tagged along, got soaking wet, and brought back this story.
You can see a slideshow of photos from Gabriel's excursion, and plenty of other stuff at WBEZ's Clever Apes blog.
