Population growth has left its mark on the Chicago area’s waterways. Streams and rivers are engineered to meet the needs of city dwellers and rural farmers. Now there’s a move to restore some of those waterways - even using historical photos to recreate the original bends and channels.

A group of volunteers and scientists headed out recently to one nearby creek. They went to see what a lowly shellfish could tell us about how the restoration is going. WBEZ’s Gabriel Spitzer tagged along, got soaking wet, and brought back this story.

You can see a slideshow of photos from Gabriel’s excursion, and plenty of other stuff at WBEZ’s Clever Apes blog.
