Breast cancer was the struggle that Denise Milito had to fight. But she did it in an unlikely way — with a paintbrush. Milito is responsible for The Living Breast Artist Series, a project that features nude photographs of women’s breasts painted by Milito. Some bear severe scars underneath the paint others remain untouched—but what unites these women is that they’ve all somehow been affected by breast cancer.

Those photographs are currently on display at Chicago’s Flourish Studios. Alison Cuddy recently met up with Milito and one of her subjects for a tour. Milito describes the type of artwork this exhibition displays.

Part of the proceeds from the Living Breast Artist Series benefit the rowing organization Recovery on Water.
