When the Runaways formed in the mid 1970s, the all-girl rock group was – well, a runaway success. Within a year Joan Jett and her band mates signed to a label and released their debut album. In 1977 they toured Japan, where their popularity drew huge – and loud – numbers of fans. But the band’s crash came almost as quickly as their climb to fame - by 1979 the Runaways were no more. Their brief life and times of the band is the subject of the new film The Runaways. To break down the rock and roll biopic is director of  the Nightingale Christy LeMaster. She also writes about film for Cine-File the weekly guide to alternative cinema.
