Illinois Lawmakers Fail To Free Up Colleges’ Money

Democrats in the Illinois statehouse failed Wednesday to override Republican Gov. Bruce Rauner’s veto of a bill to aid low-income students. The state’s eight-month budget impasse caused funding to dry up for numerous public programs, including higher education, but the bill would have freed up $721 million for community colleges and scholarships.

The latest political fight comes with Illinois’s March 15 primary elections looming. Tony Arnold of WBEZ talks with Here & Now’s Jeremy Hobson about how this latest skirmish may play out politically and what it may mean for the future of the state’s students.
