Nightclubbing: White Mystery, Big Science, farewell to the Mopery, and more

White Mystery

As summer (finally) draws to a close, things remain pretty sleepy in the club and theater world, and/or dazed from festival hangover. But there still are some fine shows flying just below the radar.

Rapidly building a well-deserved national buzz, the take-no-prisoners garage[punk duo White Mystery tops the bill at Lincoln Hall tonight. The awe-inspiring Miss Alex White and her brother, drummer, and musical partner Francis are still riding high on the March release of their self-titled D.I.Y. debut album--one tune just got picked up to provide the soundtrack to a jeans commercial--and they share a strong lineup this evening with local orchestral popsters the 1900s (gearing up for the release of their next disc, "Return of the Century") and Lover starting at 10 p.m. Tickets are $10.

Blane Fonda

Another buzzed local combo with a less aggressive, more groovy sound is Blane Fonda. The group is part of a full bill starting at 8 tonight at the Darkroom, and the lineup also features Rabbit Children, the Duke of Dark, and Equalizer featuring the Melismatics. Tickets are $8 in advance or $10 at the door.

Big Science

One more from the local buzz bin: Big Science builds on that post-punk dance-rock merger so beloved by every band from Brooklyn, but it takes the strengths of that sound -- the melody, the brains, the grooves -- and loses the bad stuff (namely, the art-school pretensions). It tops the lineup at the Bottom Lounge during a show that kicks off at 9 p.m. with Camera, the Kickback, and Post Honeymoon, brought to you by ChIRP, the Chicago Indie Radio Project. The cover is $8, or $5 with a band flyer or special code.

Paper Mice

Finally, on a sadder note, the low-profile but high-quality performance space known as the Mopery is calling it quits with one final show starting at 7 p.m. tomorrow. Located at 2734 N. Milwaukee, the Mopery popped up plenty of times in past months as the local stop on the roster of cool underground groups on tour, and it was a great place for local bands to play, too, though it maintained an intentionally low profile. Now, a staggering lineup of local bands is turning up to bid farewell: Lechuguillas, Running, Loose Dudes, Paper Mice, Bad Drugs, Unmanned Ship, Sun Splitter, ONO, Mark Solotroff, Jason Soliday, Battleship, Sunglasses, and Tiger Hatchery. The music starts at 9, and a few more details can be found here.
