At Shimer College, Student Still Read the “Great Books”

College is more expensive than ever, so students and parents want to make sure they’re getting their money’s worth. And for many families, that means learning marketable skills for the workforce. In suburban Naperville, there’s a program that offers just that: the Shimer Great Books School at North Central College. At Shimer, both the student body and classes are small. Very small. Ninety Seven people were enrolled in 2014, and that’s down to fewer than 25 students today. We talked about the school’s philosophy and the books that are included in the curriculum with Stuart Patterson, the  chair of Shimer. And we heard from third-year Shimer student Sophie Juhlin .
