The image of the American trucker runs the gamut from modern cowboy to outlaw, troubled wanderer to roadway rebel. In the real world though it can be a rough lifestyle with fleabag motels, dangerous roads, low pay and long stretches of loneliness.

In the hierarchy of the trucker’s world the lowest rung on the ladder belongs to the long haul mover- the trucker that packs up your belongings; taking them distances that range from a  few hundred miles to cross country. Finn Murphy has been a long hauler for more than thirty years, with some stretches off the road here and there.

Murphy joins the Morning Shift to talk about his first book, The Long Hauler: A Trucker’s Tales of Life on the Road, which takes us into his world and along the journey sheds some myths about the trucker’s life.
