Experts React to Proposed Draft of Consent Decree for Chicago Police Department

Chicago residents have until August 17th to give input on a wide-ranging draft proposal for court oversight of the Chicago Police Department in an agreement known as a consent decree. If approved, a federal court and a court-appointed monitor would ensure reforms are carried out by certain deadlines. The proposal addresses concerns outlined in a scathing U.S. Department of Justice report on CPD practices issued last year. Earlier this week we checked in with WBEZ criminal Justice reporter Patrick Smith for a primer on the proposed draft.Today, reaction from three people who keep a close eye on police practices. Karen Sheley is Director of the Police Practices Project at the ACLU of Illinois. Craig Futterman is founder of the Civil Rights and Police Accountability Project at the University of Chicago, and a U of C law professor. And Tracy Siska is executive director of the Chicago Justice Project.
