Now that the Illinois primary election has come and gone, here’s what you need to know: J.B. Pritzker has won the Democratic nomination for Illinois governor. Incumbent governor Republican Bruce Rauner eked out a victory over his primary challenger, state Rep. Jeanne Ives.

In the race for attorney general, the state’s top lawyer, Democratic state Sen. Kwame Raoul narrowly defeated former governor Pat Quinn. For the Republicans, Urbana lawyer Erika Harold prevailed.

Fritz Kaegi is a name more Cook County residents are getting to know. The Oak Park mutual fund manager and political upstart struck at the heart of the Democratic machine yesterday, easily winning his party’s nomination for Cook County assessor over Joe Berrios, the current assessor and chairman of the county’s Democratic party.

Meanwhile in congressional races, conservative Democrat Dan Lipinski appears to have edged out a challenge by businesswoman Marie Newman, though the Newman campaign has yet to concede. That’s in the 3rd Congressional District in the southwest suburbs.

And Cook County Commissioner Jesus “Chuy” Garcia is starting a new chapter in his decadeslong political career. He won the Democratic nomination for the 4th Congressional District seat currently held by Rep. Luis Gutierrez, who’s retiring after 25 years.

We also talk to some of the winning candidates, including J.B. Pritzker, Gov. Bruce Rauner, Kwame Raoul, Erika Harold, Fritz Kaegi, and Chuy Garcia.
