The Chicago Marathon hits Chicago streets Sunday for its 40th year.

Carey Pinkowski has been race director for 27 of those years. When it started, the race’s more than 4,000 participants made it the largest in the world. Now, more than 10 times as many people register, and there’s big prize money to be won.

Morning Shift talks with Pinkowski about the highlights and lowlights in the race’s history as well as safety precautions and how to best plan your Sunday in light of the marathon route.
