In later 1949 and early 1950, Charlie Parker went into the studio with a string section to record a set of standards. The result was a couple of releases simply titled Charlie Parker with Strings. Parker received criticism for this outing but over the years those recordings have become recognized as masterpieces. That music is being celebrated this year at the the Music Institute of Chicago’s Charlie Parker Jazz Festival with saxophonist Charles McPherson interpreting Parker’s work with strings. McPherson and the Institute’s President Mark George joins us to talk about the legacy of Parker and those recordings with strings.
