Chicago Innovations: New App Donates Spare Change To Bail Funds

After someone is arrested, they’re usually given allowed to pay bail and go home while they wait for their court date. But for people who can’t afford bail, that’s not an option.

This can affect the outcome of cases. According to Brooklyn Defender Services, incarcerated defendants in New York were nine times more likely to plead guilty than those who could afford bail.

That’s why Kortney Ziegler and Tiffany Mikell teamed up to build Appolition. It’s an app that helps its users donate directly to charities that provide bail funds. Mikell joins the Morning Shift to tell the story behind Appolition.
