In Chicago, much of the city’s history is stored not just in books but in music. The right track can paint a picture of the city’s music scene at any given time. One Chicago DJ is doing his part to preserve some of Chicago’s music culture and history.

Jerome Derradji is a local DJ and music producer, and has been spending the last few years restoring dozens upon dozens of decaying tapes — tracks and DJ mixes from some of house music’s early giants, according to the Chicago Reader . His project, which will likely last years more, could serve as a musical snapshot to Chicago’s club world of the ‘80s and ‘90s.  The Morning Shift takes a look at why Derradji is taking on this monumental project and what it means for Chicago music buffs.
