Comedian, writer, and actor Dwayne Kennedy says he loves doing stand-up in winter rather than the summer.

“The difference is in winter, you have audiences. In summer, people are out doing other stuff,” Kennedy said Tuesday on Morning Shift.

Kennedy, a South Side native whose first performances at Zanies were back in the 1980s, returns to the Old Town comedy club for a three-night run beginning Tuesday night.

Over the last three decades, you might have also seen Kennedy on late night shows with David Letterman, Conan O’Brien, and Jimmy Kimmel. And all the while he’s been writing for everyone from Arsenio Hall to Kamau Bell.

He spoke with WBEZ’s Jason Marck about navigating the political environment in his act and writing for big name stars.
