Cook County Assessor’s Race Pits Upstart Against Establishment Pol
A year ago, no one had heard of Fritz Kaegi. Now the Oak Park businessman and candidate for Cook County Assessor is giving one of the Chicago area’s most established politicians a run for his money. Assessor Joe Berrios has faced mounting criticism since a multipart Chicago Tribune investigation last year revealed a pattern of discrimination in the way that property taxes are assessed in Cook County, with low-income homeowners shouldering more than their fair share. Kaegi has subsequently picked up endorsements from aldermen, congressmen, and other politicians, something virtually unthinkable given Berrios’ role at the chairman of the Cook County Democratic Party. Morning Shift talks to WBEZ city politics reporter Becky Vevea about the assessor’s race.
