Protests erupted in the South Shore neighborhood Saturday night after Chicago police shot and killed an African American man in the street.

Authorities said 37-year-old Harith Augustus showed “characteristics of an armed person.” He was shot after a brief scuffle with officers on foot patrol and died at Jackson Park Hospital about 5:50 p.m.

South Shore residents told reporters the man went by “Snoop” and was a longtime barber in the neighborhood. They described him as “respectful” and “family-oriented.”

Officers recovered a weapon and several magazines of ammunition at the scene. According to police, Augustus had a valid FOID — or Firearm Owners Identification — card, but not a concealed carry license.

Less than 24 hours after the shooting, the police department released an edited 45-second video of body cam footage of the incident. There is no audio and officers’ faces are blurred.
