David Schollial studies and documents the relationship between people and their spaces within an urban environment.

For years, the sociologist, photographer and filmmaker has focused his various lenses on the balance between community rights and public and private interests.

Schollial’s latest project zeros in on that balance in Chicago’s Englewood neighborhood. The Area looks at how one woman is fighting the power of a multi-billion dollar corporation that wants to dismantle their community in the name of “economic revitalization.”

The documentary will be screening at the Gene Siskel Film Center through Sept. 27.

GUEST: David Schalliol, filmmaker and assistant professor of sociology St. Olaf College
