New healthier school food rules have come under fire recently from administrators and lawmakers who say that they’re too hard to implement and that kids don’t like the food. Later this week the House Appropriations Committee is expected to consider whether to roll back some of the requirements while also adding white potatoes to the list foods paid for by the Women Infants and Childrens nutrition program. Health advocates including Rep Rosa DeLaura and chef Tom Colicchio held a press conference yesterday to protest these proposed rollbacks suggesting that the Republicans proposing the rollbacks are sacrificing nutrition for profits. Claire Benjamin, managing director of Food Policy Action, has the latest on what these rollbacks would look like. Photo: Flickr/Beau B
