Dr. Julian H. Lewis was the first African-American to earn a PHD (1915), an MD (1917) and later to teach at the University of Chicago. In doing so, he became a mentor to students of color for generations to come as well as a cherished member of the U of C faculty. As part of a Black History Month tribute and extension of online exhibition “Integrating the life of the mind: A history of African Americans at the University of Chicago,” Lewis’s life and legacy will be honored at an event on Saturday hosted by U of C’s Civic Knowledge Project and various partners. One of the event’s featured scholars Tyrone Haymore along with U of C’s Bart Schultz and Dr. Lewis’s son John Lewis join us now. (Flickr/Phil Roeder)
