Attorney General Jeff Sessions is imposing new restrictions on asylum-seekers fleeing domestic abuse and gang violence, a move immigration advocates denounced as “heartless.”

On Monday, Sessions intervened in the case of a Salvadoran woman who was abused by her former husband and overturned a court ruling that had allowed her to stay. The attorney general argues that asylum system is intended to protect people fleeing persecution.

Mayor Rahm Emanuel called the decision “abhorrent and antithetical to everything we stand for as a country,” and advocates say the decision could endanger people with legitimate claims for asylum.
