Inconsistent narratives from police on police-involved shootings

The video of the shooting death of 17-year-old Laquan McDonald by Chicago cop Jason Van Dyke is bringing to light the relationship between information about civilian shootings by cops and the official narrative. In the McDonald case, the official story is different than what actually unfolded last October. So who’s constructing the storyline and what’s the role of the media in making sure the correct narrative makes it to the public?
