Katie Ernst makes beautiful sounds from little words

Some musicians think that the best way to get the attention of the Jazz world is to put all your musical chops on display. Make it fast. Make it technical. Belt it out. Katie Ernst is doing the exact opposite. Ernst has all the chops, but her style is to hold them back, keep them on a slow boil. She’s subtle, intimate, even gentle. And that style seems to be growing a fan base every day. Her newest project has Ernst combining the words of poet Dorothy Parker with her own fresh musical compositions. It’s called “Little Words”, and she’s playing a CD release show tonight (Monday) at Martyrs’. Of course, we have her first! (Photo: Flickr/takomabibelot)
