There are references in the film Chi-Raq to saving the lives of the babies, the young African Americans. While the average life expectancy for Americans is between mid-to-late 70s, a recent study shows that half of young African Americans don’t expect to live beyond age 35. Violence and the threat of violence is one of the factors behind that pessimism. But what else is playing a role in this thinking? Dr. Tara Warner, assistant professor of Sociology at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, sheds some light on some of the other reasons. She co-authored the Adolescent Survival Expectations study.
