Morning Shift

Mae Ya Carter-Ryan

Teen vocalist Mae Ya has only been singing for about five years, but you’d never know it once the 13-year-old begins belting out a tune. Mae Ya’s voice is reminiscent of jazz and gospel greats Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Mahalia Jackson and Nina Simone. She’s performed at the Hyde Park Jazz Festival and the DuSable Museum’s Mahalia Jackson Tribute, among other venues. Mae Ya’s in studio to perform and discuss how she got her start.
