Mayor Emanuel Has Yet To Deliver On 1,000-Cop Pledge

For several years, Mayor Rahm Emanuel has continued to promise an increase in police officers on Chicago’s streets, a pledge he repeated when releasing his 2018 budget in October.

The mayor said he planned to put nearly 1,000 police officers in the field by hiring new recruits and pulling current officers from desk jobs.

But a recent investigation by ProPublica Illinois found that not only is CPD behind in its hiring goals, but more officers hold desk jobs than in previous years — positions that could be filled by civilians to free officers to patrol the streets.

Morning Shift talks to Mick Dumke, a reporter for ProPublica Illinois, about what he found when he dug into CPD records.
