Meet Chicago’s New School Board

Mayor Lori Lightfoot announced her picks to serve on Chicago’s Board of Education Monday, stressing that all seven members will be doing serious work.

“They are there to ask tough questions, to challenge us, to challenge Dr. Jackson and her team, but all with an effort of focusing on what we can do to really improve the quality of the classroom experience,” Lightfoot said yesterday at a press conference.

The board includes Chicago Public Schools graduates, a principal and community advocates, and some CPS grandparents, including new board president former City Clerk Miguel Del Valle.

“I want vocal, active board members who will use their expertise to challenge our departments, challenge our staff in board meetings,” Del Valle told WBEZ.

Lightfoot eventually wants an elected school board. It was a pledge she campaigned on, but that will take a vote in Springfield.

Morning Shift digs into what we can expect from Mayor Lightfoot’s appointees and when and whether we will see an elected school board in the new future.
