More people turn away from credit and move toward cash

Data breaches at Target, Nieman Marcus, Michael’s and most recently P.F. Chang’s, prompted some of us to start using cash more than their credit and debit cards. Target offered its customers free credit report monitoring. There’s a certain group which had no worries about the financial impact of the breaches – the unbanked. According to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation’s 2011 National Survey of Unbanked and Underbanked, nearly 10 million U.S. households are unbanked. That number slightly increased since the survey was first done in 2009. There are 24 million U.S. households that are underbanked.
