Protesters took to the streets Wednesday after Mayor Rahm Emanuel’s speech to the City Council, where he showed a rare moment of contrition about how he handled the Laquan McDonald shooting by a Chicago police officer. But even at that moment, protesters outside the chambers were unmoved, and later, hundreds blocked downtown streets demanding change in leadership. The mayor says he won’t resign. We talk about the potential of a recall in the city. Then, as Chicagoans engage in a public debate about what needs to change with the police department, one group you rarely hear from are the officers themselves. We sit down with a veteran Chicago police officer about what it’s like to be a cop in the era of Laquan McDonald, a Department of Justice investigation, and fractured police-community relations. And two Chicago aldermen share their take on the unfolding events and the challenges facing not only the mayor but the City Council.
