Nearly two weeks after performing last year with fellow majorettes from King College Prep at President Barack Obama’s inauguration, 15-year-old Hadiya Pendleton was fatally shot near the high school, which is about a mile away from the First Family’s home. Her funeral was televised live and attended by hundreds, including first lady Michelle Obama. Two men have been charged with her murder. Hadiya’s death sparked an international discussion about gun violence in Chicago and it was mentioned in the president’s 2013 State of the Union Address.
