Nationwide protests against police use of force are coming to Hammond, Indiana this weekend. In the wake of recent high-profile cases of alleged police misconduct, some say Hammond needs an independent oversight body to hold officers accountable. Norma Maldonado said a federal lawsuit that she filed last summer could have been avoided had such a system been in place. Maldonado filed the suit after a Hammond cop shot the family’s dog near her 7-year-old son. One veteran attorney says other cities in Northwest Indiana like Valparaiso have a better handle on police accountability. WBEZ’s Michael Puente has the latest on calls for more police oversight.
