ProPublica Illinois Sheds Light On Area Shelters Holding Migrant Children

Thousands of migrant children are housed in 11 Chicago-area shelters each year,  including more than 100 who were separated from their parents by the Trump administration.

Most are run by Heartland Human Care Services, a branch of the Chicago-based Heartland Alliance. Little is known about the facilities — some aldermen were unaware that migrant children were being detained in their wards — and Heartland is facing increased scrutiny following reports of alleged abuse at the shelters.

ProPublica Illinois reporters Duaa Eldeib and Jodi Cohen join the Morning Shift to talk about the facilities and the children detained under President Trump’s family separation policy.
