Illinois Governor Bruce Rauner looked outside the state for his latest appointee. He’s tapped Florida Democrat George Seldon to lead the state’s Department of Children and Family Services. Sheldon ran the Florida Department of Children and Families from 2008 through 2011. This appointment comes at a crucial time for DCFS. As we’ve reported with the Chicago Sun-Times, more kids have died in Illinois even after the agency has been involved with the family or caretakers. And, a recent investigation by the Chicago Tribune found that kids placed in residential facilities contracted by the state faced physical and sexual abuse, and didn’t receive the therapy and treatment the facilities were being paid to provide. Tribune investigative reporter Gary Marx was one of the reporters on that series and he and his colleague David Jackson broke the news today about Rauner’s new appointee. Marx joins us with more.
