When is a memoir like a mystery? When you find yourself tracking down old childhood friends to interview them about growing up in Evanston. That’s what sociologist and Evanston native Mary Barr found herself doing when embarking on her latest book Friends Disappear: The Battle for Racial Equality in Evanston. The book is a journey back in time. Barr revisits her old neighborhood and finds that there is a “detrimental myth” of integration surrounding Evanston despite lots of evidence of actual segregation, both in the archives and from the life stories of her subjects. She joins us to talk about what she’s found.
