Two years ago, Morgan Park resident and journalist Scott Smith teamed up with the Beverly Area Arts Alliance to create the Frunchroom, a reading and storytelling series that brings writers, artists and activists together periodically for story slams about the South Side and South Side issues. Topics have included everything from food deserts to biking on the South Side to childhood memories.

This week, the Frunchroom is celebrating its second anniversary with two nights of programming featuring stories from the likes of Cook County Commissioner Bridget Gainer, activist Jahmal Cole and WBEZ producer, host and DJ Ayana Contreras. Morning Shift talks to Scott Smith about what he’s trying to accomplish with the Frunchroom and what types of stories its participants tell on stage.
