Stranger Than Fiction series highlights locally-made documentaries

The annual Stranger Than Fiction series offers documentary film fans the chance to see some of the more unusual and underground works from around the world. This year’s showcase includes documentaries with strong local ties. Almost There goes up close and personal with outsider artist Peter Anton, who’s coming to terms with old age while living in complicated conditions in Northwest Indiana. The documentary showcase opens with Compass Cabaret 55, about the history of The Compass Theater, the precursor to Second City and the birth of improv that started at University of Chicago. We talk with Compass Cabaret 55 director Mark Siska about the film, and Gene Siskel Film Center Director of Programming Barbara Scharres details some of the other docs filling out the roster.
