Beginning today, the Studs Terkel Radio Archive becomes available to everyone, online, for free.
Studs Terkel loved Chicago. And he understood that the beating heart of the city was its people. For more than 4 decades, he talked to everyone he could get behind a microphone: musicians and politicians, railroad workers and civil rights workers, symphony conductors and steel workers. For Terkel, there was no such thing as an “ordinary” person. Everyone was extraordinary. Everyone had a story to tell. And Studs wanted to hear it all and bring those conversations to his listeners on WFMT radio. We’ll hear snippets of Studs’ chats, and find out how this massive undertaking came together from the head of the project and one of the archivists.
