Mayors from across Illinois have launched a pre-emptive strike against Springfield as the governor and lawmakers work out a budget deal that’s due by the end of the month. Those officials from suburbs like Downers Grove and Geneva do not want a budget that takes money away from their municipal coffers. Under Illinois law, cities get a portion of the money collected by state income taxes, but that amount has been cut by 10 percent and the governor wants to do the same this year. In response, a group of suburban mayors launched a campaign called Protect My Town to educate their residents about the stakes involved in continued cuts to their share of that tax money.
